Across America, obstetricians and gynecologists provide life-saving medical care to women every day without ever having to abort an unborn baby, according to a medical association representing 7,000 pro-life OB-GYNs.
This week, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) began a new campaign to help Americans understand that killing unborn babies in abortions is not health care. It published a fact sheet, “Myth vs. Fact: Correcting Misinformation on Maternal Medical Care,” that refutes nine of the most common lies about abortion.
To prove its point, AAPLOG pointed to a 2017 study from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute that found very few OB-GYNs actually do abortions.
According to the medical association, “93 percent of practicing OB-GYNs do not perform elective abortions but have always been able to offer life-saving treatment to women and will continue to be able to do so regardless of state laws on abortion.”
Perhaps the reason is because they, like tens of thousands of other doctors across the U.S., recognize that unborn babies are second patients in every pregnancy and their lives are valuable.
All OB-GYNs “offer lifesaving medical care to pregnant women” and receive training to “discern when they need to intervene to save a mother’s life,” AAPLOG continued.

That includes caring for pregnant mothers who suffer miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies. According to the medical association, the claim that abortion bans prevent women from receiving this care is a myth. Abortion bans prohibit the killing of unborn babies in elective abortions.
Here’s more from The Federalist:
In the case of a miscarriage, “the baby has already died and therefore any treatment of a miscarriage would not be an abortion.”
Treating ectopic pregnancy involves removing an embryo that has implanted outside the uterus and thus cannot survive. “This life-saving treatment is not prevented by any current law restricting or banning abortion,” AAPLOG explains.
Other myths that the medical association tackled include claims about pro-life laws leading to increased rates of maternal mortality and harming other women’s health care.
As to maternal mortality, AAPLOG highlighted studies from various countries that suggest “abortion is actually associated with higher maternal mortality rates and restrictions may lead to improved maternal health.” Other research found that “abortion is associated with 49.5 maternal deaths per 100,000 women compared to a rate of only 8.1 per 100,000 for all external causes of death after delivery,” the pro-life medical group wrote.
The OB-GYN association defended pro-life laws from attacks, too, saying they help women by ensuring that abortion facilities provide accurate information and are prepared to help patients suffering from medical emergencies.
“For example, ultrasounds help verify the gestational age, which is critical to accurately assessing the risks associated with an abortion,” AAPLOG wrote. “The further along in the pregnancy a woman is, the greater risk she faces from an abortion. There is no way to provide accurate informed consent for a woman if the gestational age of her pregnancy is not certain.”
Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, more than a dozen states have begun enforcing laws that protect unborn babies from abortion. SBA Pro-Life America estimates about 139,000 unborn babies are being saved from abortion as a result, and more state pro-life laws are slated to go into effect soon.
