Saint Xavier University in Chicago is paying for student health insurance that covers elective abortions in violation of its Catholic mission, according to a new investigation.

The College Fix recently discovered that the Catholic university provides health insurance to students that includes “abortion care services.”

“Benefits include abortion care services,” according to the 2021-2022 insurance plan. The university health insurance also covers contraception and sterilization procedures; however, it does not cover “abortifacient drugs,” according to the report.

The Illinois school also covered elective abortions for students in its health insurance plan during the 2020-2021 school year, according to the report.

“It’s the responsibility of Catholic universities to authentically care for their students, and abortion is not authentic support for pregnant and parenting students,” said Sarah Michalak, a 2019 graduate of Saint Xavier and regional coordinator for Students for Life.

Michalak told The Fix that the university pro-life club plans to talk with administrators about the problem.

“We know that abortion is not authentic support, and we will fight for pregnant and parenting students and preborn babies,” she said. “If the university is unaware of this inconsistency, we are hoping that they will correct their error immediately.”

The university did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Fix. A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Chicago told the news outlet that Saint Xavier and the archdiocese are independent from each other, and recommended that The Fix contact the university directly.

For years, Students for Life, The Fix and others have been urging Christian colleges and universities to stop promoting the killing of unborn babies in abortions, a violation of their faith.

In April, Students for Life released a report identifying 25 Christian universities that promote or work with the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood. Some described the abortion group as a “trusted resource” on their websites, others hosted events with Planned Parenthood or advertised internships for it.

As a result of the report, several universities did end their connections to Planned Parenthood.

Students for Life leaders said they are working to document every Christian school in the U.S. that partners with the abortion chain in some capacity. Thus far, the pro-life organization has examined more than 700 colleges and universities.

Other Christian universities caught paying for abortions in their student health plans include:

University of San Diego

University of San Francisco
