Sen. Bernie Sanders reacted Thursday to the likelihood that the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade by demanding that Congress pass a law to legalize abortion on demand nationwide.
The Hill reports Sanders, a pro-abortion socialist from Vermont, issued the call on Twitter after Politico leaked an alleged draft opinion from the court that overturns Roe v. Wade.
Reportedly, the draft ruling would return the abortion issue to the states. If that happens, researchers predict as many as 26 states would ban abortions, saving hundreds of thousands of unborn babies’ lives.
Sanders said he wants to stop that from happening and called for ending the filibuster, if necessary, to do it.
“Congress must pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade as the law of the land in this country NOW,” Sanders wrote. “And if there aren’t 60 votes in the Senate to do it, and there are not, we must end the filibuster to pass it with 50 votes.”

Responding to Sanders, pro-life U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, criticized the politician for trying to change the rules just so unborn babies can keep being killed.
“Translation: Let’s change the rules of the Senate to pass a federal law legalizing the killing of unborn children right up to the day of delivery,” Rubio wrote.
In February, the Senate rejected legislation that would have “codified Roe” by forcing states to legalize the killing of unborn babies for basically any reason up to birth. The filibuster and lone pro-life Democrat, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, helped to defeat the bill. The U.S. House, which is controlled by Democrats, passed the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act last year.
The pro-abortion bill would get rid of bans on partial-birth abortions, late-term abortions, sex-selection abortions and taxpayer-funded abortions. Laws that protect women and girls would be eliminated, too, including parental consent for minors and informed consent laws that ensure mothers receive basic facts about their unborn baby’s development before going through with an abortion.
Democrats only narrowly control the U.S. Senate, and they do not have enough votes to pass the bill or end the filibuster. Republicans and two Democrat Senators, Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, of Arizona, oppose ending the filibuster, and Manchin opposes abortion.
Polls consistently show that Americans oppose abortion on demand, too. A January poll from Marist University found that only 36 percent of Americans want abortions to remain legal without limits, while 61 percent want states to be allowed to protect unborn babies from abortion again.
For nearly five decades, Roe has prevented state and federal lawmakers from enacting abortion bans before an unborn baby is viable. As a result, more than 63 million unborn babies have been aborted in America.
Now, pro-life advocates have renewed hope that the Supreme Court will overturn the infamous ruling through the Mississippi case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. A ruling is expected this summer.
