Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke has hired the former CEO of America’s biggest abortion business to head up fundraising for his campaign. The last thing Texas needs is Cecile Richards and the ardent abortion activist running the state.

O’Rourke is running behind in his bid to defeat pro-life Governor Greg Abbott, who has signed every pro-life bill that has come to his desk. Under Abbott, Texas is the first state in the nation to successfully ban aboritons and as many as 10,000 or more babies have been saved thanks for the unique abortion ban being in place for over 250 days.

Needing a massive influx of ash to have any chance of besting Abbott, O’Rourke has brought on abortion’s biggest cheerleader to help run the show.

Cecile Richards, who is also the daughter of the last Democratic governor of Texas, Ann Richards, will join O’Rourke’s campaign as national finance chair. The 64-year-old advocate for abortion rights was born in Waco and formed a political action committee in 2019 aimed at electing women.

“I’ll always be a Texan, and I’m proud to be part of the team that’s going to make sure this campaign has the resources, support and backing necessary to turn a corner in Texas,” Richards said in a statement released by O’Rourke’s campaign on Tuesday.

O’Rourke, a Democrat, is facing off against Republican Greg Abbott in the November race, and polls show the two-term incumbent holds a significant lead. Abbott has much more money to spend on the campaign, with about $50 million in his campaign’s bank account versus $7 million for his challenger as of the latest disclosures from February. No Democrat has won a statewide election in Texas since 1994.

Richards was president of Planned Parenthood from 2006 to 2018, and formed a political action committee in 2019 to empower female candidates for office. Before joining Planned Parenthood, Richards also served as deputy chief of staff to U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi.

Abbott was the featured speaker at the recent Texas Rally for Life in front of the Texas capitol in January, celebrating a new Texas law that bans abortions.

The governor said he was delighted to sign the abortion ban into law.

“There’s no freedom more precious than life itself,” Abbott told the enthusiastic crowd of several thousand pro-life advocates. “I promised to protect the life of a child with a heartbeat, and we did,” Abbott said. “I am proud to join you in this fight to protect the sanctity of life, and we did.”

Although abortion advocates falsely claim pro-life people don’t care about women and children after birth, Abbott noted how the state didn’t just ban abortions. It also approved a new fund to provide support for women and children.

“I am proud that Texas is stepping up and providing $100 million for alternatives to abortion programs to support expecting mothers in need,” he said.
