Catholic Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Washington, D.C. said Tuesday that President Joe Biden is “not demonstrating Catholic teaching” when he advocates for the killing of unborn babies in abortions.

Crux reports Gregory, who has been hesitant to criticize the supposedly devout Catholic president, made the comment in response to a question during a National Press Club lunch.

A reporter asked Gregory to respond to Biden’s recent comment about disagreeing with “those who believe life begins at the moment of conception.” Biden also said he is a “strong supporter of Roe v. Wade” in a statement criticizing the new Texas heartbeat law.

“The Catholic Church teaches, and has taught, that human life begins at conception, so the president is not demonstrating Catholic teaching,” Gregory answered.

Here’s more from Crux:

The comments from Gregory are the first time he’s publicly spoken against Biden since he was elected in November. …

Gregory also clarified that theologians “continue to debate” issues surrounding when life begins in the process of fertilization, but reaffirmed the church’s teaching on abortion.

“Our church has not changed its position on the immorality of abortion,” Gregory said. “I don’t see how we could because we believe that every human life is sacred.”

Gregory has faced criticism for allowing Biden to participate in Communion despite his radical pro-abortion actions. Both the archbishop and the priests at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown, which Biden attends while in Washington, D.C., repeatedly have defended giving Communion to Biden and other pro-abortion lawmakers who claim to be Catholic.

In a statement after the election in November, Gregory said Biden went to Mass regularly and received Communion while he was vice president under pro-abortion President Barack Obama, and “I will not veer from that.”

He said it is normal for Catholics to have disagreements; they are part of “being a family, a family of faith. The difficulty is too many people want to throw out of the family of faith people with whom they have disagreements.”

But with Biden, the problem is more than just a “disagreement.” He does not just support the killing of unborn babies in abortions; he wants to expand it and force all Americans to be complicit in it by forcing them to pay for abortions with their tax dollars.

Last week, Biden said he “respects” those who disagree with him on abortion, but his actions do not show it. Recently, his administration dropped a lawsuit defending the conscience rights of a pro-life nurse who said the taxpayer-funded hospital where she worked tricked her into helping abort an unborn baby.

Then, this week, the Biden administration filed a lawsuit challenging the Texas heartbeat law, which protects unborn babies with detectable heartbeats from abortion. It did this despite several recent polls showing that Americans support heartbeat laws that protect unborn babies.

Biden used to say he was pro-life. He used to say he believed that life begins at conception, too. But since becoming president, he had adopted an increasingly radical, out-of-touch pro-abortion agenda that does not align with his Catholic faith or the vast majority of Americans.
