The nation’s Catholic bishops have condemned a new proposal from Joe Biden to force employers to foot the bill for their pregnant employees to have an abortionist kill their unborn babies.

As LifeNews has reported, last year, Congress passed a law to protect pregnant women from employer discrimination, and Democrats insisted the law could not be used to force employers to provide leave for abortions.

This regulation subverts a measure protecting pregnant women and weaponizes it against unborn babies—the very lives those women are bringing into the world.

“These regulations completely disregard legislative intent and attempt to rewrite the law by regulation,” Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., told Politico in August. “The decision to disregard the legislative process to inject a political abortion agenda is illegal and deeply concerning.”

Now, the nation’s Catholic bishops have condemned Biden’s proposal as well.

However, the U.S. Catholic bishops and other religious organizations have argued that the way the rule defines “pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions” to include abortion could result in pro-life views leading to a harassment charge.

In an Oct. 27 letter to the EEOC, representatives of the bishops’ conference argued that “references to abortion in the harassment guidance are problematic and should be removed.”

“Opposition to abortion (including speech opposing abortion) is not sexual harassment because it is not based on sex,” the letter said.

“We encourage speech on abortion and other moral issues that is respectful, courteous, and constructive,” it said. “It is reasonable for employers and employees to insist upon civility and non-disruption in the workplace as a general matter. But on issues that involve no protected category, such as abortion, Title VII itself is silent and therefore has no role.

“It is good that we have laws prohibiting harassment in the workplace,” the bishops’ message said. “But speech expressing moral opposition to abortion, contraception, or same-sex unions, or speech that refers to people by their actual sex, is not harassment.”

Americans also oppose Biden’s radical abortion agenda.

Public comments closed recently on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) regulation establishing a national mandate on employers to accommodate workers’ abortions under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA).

During the 30-day comment period, readers submitted 27,230 comments through CatholicVote’s action center. Unconfirmed sources inside the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) state that another 20,800 comments objecting to the rule were submitted through their efforts.

The EEOC reported receiving 63,330 comments in total, meaning that Catholics and their allies provided over 75% of all feedback.

CatholicVote Director of Governmental Affairs Tom McClusky noted:

If the EEOC and the Biden administration have any meaningful interest in “the will of the people,” this figure is incontrovertible evidence that the vast majority of politically-engaged Americans reject the EEOC’s unconscionable regulation.
