Cecile Richards, the former Planned Parenthood CEO who made millions presiding over about 3.5 million unborn babies’ abortion deaths, criticized Texas this week for saving babies’ lives through its new heartbeat law.

In an interview with KERA News, Richards slammed the pro-life law as “cruel” and described abortion on demand as “progress.”

“All of us who have worked in this area for a long, long time have hoped that this day would never come, but here it is,” Richards said. “This is a cruel and unconstitutional law.”

Abortions have stopped almost completely in Texas since the law went into effect Sept. 1. The law prohibits abortions once an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable, about six weeks of pregnancy; and thus far, no court has blocked it.

Pro-life leaders estimate the law is saving up to 100 unborn babies from abortion every day. In 2020, about 54,000 unborn babies were aborted in Texas, and about 85 percent happened after six weeks of pregnancy, according to state health statistics.

To Richards, however, the life-saving law is the opposite of democracy and freedom.

“I just thought how upsetting it was to think that all the things that we’ve fought for in Texas,” she said. “Building our democracy, better access to opportunities for everyone, that really in one day it just crushed decades and decades of progress in the state.”

The daughter of the late Texas Gov. Ann Richards, she lamented that the heartbeat law passed the Texas legislature on her mother’s birthday, according to the report. Richards said it is “unconscionable” that millions of women have “lost” their “right” to an abortion in Texas.

“What’s on my mind is that every day in Texas now, millions of people wake up who have lost this right to make their own decision about pregnancy,” she said. “And that is unconscionable.”

She urged people to join her in criticizing the law, claiming that their vocal support for abortion on demand will encourage struggling women.

“The worst thing could happen is that people’s rights are taken away, and it’s silent,” Richards said. “I know people are afraid. And so it’s even more important to speak up and speak out, because you can’t ever know how much that helps people who are really struggling right now.”

Pro-life advocates are speaking out and offering real help to struggling mothers and babies in need. Hundreds of pregnancy resource centers, maternity homes and other charities provide free resources to pregnant and parenting families across Texas with compassion and understanding. Earlier this year, state lawmakers increased support for pregnant and parenting mothersensuring that they have resources to choose life for their babies.

Planned Parenthood and other abortion facilities do not really help women in need. They sell abortions, taking women’s money and then killing their unborn children and sending them back into the world to deal with their problems on their own. This is the real “cruelty.”
