A new U.S. Department of Defense bill would force the military to allow its employees and their partners to take leave for elective abortions.

The Daily Wire reports the abortion proposal is part of a military spending bill that the Democrat-led U.S. House Appropriations Committee released Tuesday.

Pro-abortion Democrat leaders are considering a number of ways to expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions through the military. They expressed outrage that the U.S. Supreme Court soon may overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states to protect unborn babies from abortion again.

The measure in the military spending bill “prohibits funds for denying leave to servicemembers or civilians requesting leave to obtain an abortion” as well as “the spouse, partner, or significant other of a pregnant individual [who] requests leave to assist that individual in obtaining an abortion.”

In other words, it appears that Department of Defense employers who refuse to grant leave to employees and their partners for elective abortions will be defunded.

Current law in effect since 1996 prohibits the performance of elective abortions by Department of Defense medical personnel and medical facilities. The Hyde Amendment also prohibits taxpayer funding for abortions in the military, with exceptions for cases of rape, incest or risks to the mother’s life.

Now, however, with the possibility of Roe being gone soon, pro-abortion Democrat lawmakers are trying to make changes in the military.

Earlier this month, U.S. House Democrats introduced another piece of legislation to allow military medical facilities to provide elective abortions and force taxpayers to pay for abortions for service members and their families, American Military News reports.

The MARCH for Servicemembers Act, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-California, would repeal laws that restricts military medical facilities and funding from being used for elective abortions. More than 80 House Democrats have co-sponsored the bill.

Speier said she believes her legislation is needed now more than ever after news broke in May about a leaked draft ruling that shows the Supreme Court overturning Roe. If Roe goes, as many as 26 states may ban abortions, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

“The fallout for our service members and their families will be catastrophic, as is the threat to our military readiness morale, and unit cohesion,” Speier said.

Her proposed legislation is not a new idea. Pro-abortion Democrat lawmakers have been trying to require military base medical facilities to provide elective abortions for decades.

When former President Bill Clinton allowed abortions in military facilities from 1993 to 1996, military physicians, nurses and other medical workers refused to perform or assist in elective abortions. Before the current law went into effect, the Clinton administration attempted to hire civilians to do abortions on military bases.

Since then, bills to allow elective abortions in the military have repeatedly failed in Congress, including a budget amendment that Speier introduced in 2016.

Since Roe v. Wade, about 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions. The 1973 ruling forces states to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions up to viability and allows states to legalize abortions up to birth.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the Mississippi abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health likely the end of June.
