A heartbroken Italian man whose wife and unborn daughter died this month wants to know if an abortion really was necessary to save his wife’s life.

Ruetir reports the man recently filed a complaint seeking information about his wife’s death. The 24-year-old woman died June 14 at the Vito Fazzi hospital in Lecce, four days after having an abortion that doctors said would save her life, according to the report.

The woman was in poor health and had been suffering pregnancy complications for weeks, the report states.

In early June, when she was four months pregnant with their unborn daughter, her husband said doctors advised her to have an abortion to save her life. They agreed, and, on June 10, doctors aborted their baby girl, according to the report.

However, the woman’s condition worsened and she also died four days later, her husband said.

He told Ruetir that he decided to file a complaint and request an investigation because he wonders if aborting their unborn baby really was necessary and if his wife and daughter otherwise might still be alive.

Abortions are legal for basically any reason up to 90 days in Italy and later in certain circumstances, such as risks to the mother’s life.

Pro-life laws always allow exceptions for the rare, tragic circumstances when a mother’s life is at risk and both her life and her unborn baby’s cannot be saved. However, abortions also have risks, and sometimes both mother and child still die.

Very rarely are abortions done to save the mother’s life. “Just 6 in every 100,000 abortions being performed in England and Wales were undertaken to save the mother from a life-threatening situation,” according to research highlighted at the Christian Post. Most abortions are elective, and their purpose is to kill, not to save.

Medical leaders representing more than 30,000 doctors have previously said intentionally killing a late-term unborn baby in an abortion is never necessary to save a mother’s life. And Doctor and Kansas Rep. Roger W. Marshall, who has delivered over 5,000 babies, wrote an op-ed saying there aren’t any reasons why a late-term abortion is necessary to protect a woman’s health.
