Pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood are spending tens of millions of dollars to slam Republicans as extreme on abortion ahead of the midterm election.

But that adjective really belongs to Democrat politicians – who do not even support protections for babies after they are born.

The National Review editorial board highlighted Democrats’ pro-abortion extremism Tuesday in an editorial, pointing to their objections to legislation that would protect unborn babies from elective, late-term abortions and infanticide.

“Congressional Democrats are perhaps one or two Senate seats shy of providing unlimited taxpayer funding of elective abortions for Medicaid recipients — a policy that would result in tens of thousands more babies being dismembered or poisoned to death in the womb each year,” the editors warned, while urging pro-life candidates to point out who the real extremists are.

If Democrats gain a few more seats in Congress, they want to pass a bill nicknamed the Abortion Without Limits Up to Birth Act, which would force states to legalize abortions for basically any reason through all nine months of pregnancy, force taxpayers to pay for elective abortions nationwide, allow sex-selection abortions, and eliminate informed consent laws.

The legislation passed the U.S. House with near-unanimous support from Democrats this year, but Republicans blocked it in the Senate.

“That same abortion bill — the one almost all Democrats are promising to make law in 2023 if they get the chance — would also gut conscience laws that protect health-care workers, strike down parental-consent abortion laws, and override some state laws banning partial-birth abortion,” according to National Review.

Further proof of their radicalism, Democrats in Congress also repeatedly defeated two moderate bills that have strong public support: the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which bans elective abortions after 20 weeks, and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which requires basic medical care for babies who survive abortions.

These protective measures are needed. Between 2016 and 2018, just three states reported 40 babies were born alive after botched abortions. It is possible that hundreds of babies survive abortions in the U.S. every year, but most states do not keep track.

Many of these babies could have been healthy, viable infants. A recent study from ANSIRH found that the reasons why women have “third-trimester abortions are not so different from why” women have abortions earlier in pregnancy, and abortion data indicates that nearly all abortions (more than 95 percent) are elective. The Associated Press and New York Magazine recently featured stories about women getting elective late-term abortions at 26 weeks and 28 weeks — both mothers were healthy and carrying healthy babies.

Tens of thousands of unborn babies’ lives are at stake because Democrat lawmakers refuse to pass legislation that most Americans support.

Here’s more from National Review:

The lives of more than 15,000 unique human beings are killed by abortion each year in America later than 20 weeks of pregnancy, and most abortions between weeks 20 and 28 of pregnancy are not performed for “reasons of fetal anomaly or life endangerment,” according to a 2013 study. Most Americans can recognize that these late abortions are tantamount to infanticide. But several state laws explicitly allow elective abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Other states have loopholes that effectively create the same kind of barbaric abortion policy found in North Korea and China. Last week, NPR reported that a new “all-trimester” clinic will soon open in Maryland that will offer abortions up to 34 weeks into the pregnancy.

Americans – including many Democrat voters – want strong legal protections for unborn babies. Polls consistently show strong public opposition to taxpayer funding for abortions and late-term abortions, and support for laws that protect unborn babies from abortion after the first trimester or once their heart begins to beat. Americans overwhelmingly support parental consent for minors, too.

The Democratic Party has become extreme on abortion, much too extreme for the American people.
