Failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton acted shocked Tuesday when U.S. Senate Republicans introduced a federal bill to protect unborn babies from abortions after 15 weeks.

Pro-life Republican lawmakers always have been clear that they support legislation to protect unborn babies from abortion, and now that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, lawmakers have the power to do so.

This week, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, introduced legislation to ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy throughout the U.S. Exceptions would be allowed for rape, incest and threats to the mother’s life.

Most countries across the world prohibit abortions after 15 weeks, and polls consistently show a majority of Americans support laws that protect unborn babies from abortion by this point, if not earlier.

However, Democrats and most mainstream news outlets reacted as if the legislation was a surprise and a political mistake leading up to the November election.

“Republicans aren’t even trying to hide it,” Clinton wrote on Twitter in response to the bill. “If they re-take the House in November, they will impose a national abortion ban at 15 weeks.”

But pro-life advocates’ goals have never been a secret. The key mission of the pro-life movement is to protect unborn babies from abortion, and one of the ways to do that is by restoring legal protections and their right to life in law.

Elle Purnell, an assistant editor at The Federalist, said pro-life advocates wanted Roe overturned, but states’ rights was not the objective.

“Yes, we lauded Dobbs for lifting the federal ban on protecting life at the state level,” Purnell wrote. “And we pointed out the obvious inconsistency of pro-abortion leftists claiming this return of federalism and lawmaking authority to elected state leaders was somehow a massive abuse of the Supreme Court’s power.”

But the ultimate goal – the one that pro-life advocates always have been clear about – is to protect unborn babies from violent abortion deaths. For nearly 50 years under Roe, more than 63 million unborn babies were legally aborted, and state and federal lawmakers were prohibited from passing laws to save them.

Overturning Roe was only a “partial victory” for pro-lifers because many states still allow unborn babies to be aborted, and it “isn’t going to make us slow down,” Purnell said.

She continued:

It’s either disingenuous, constitutionally illiterate, or both for Democrats to claim that a Republican push to ban some or all abortions at the federal level is out of line with the pro-life movement’s goal of the past 50 years. Of course we aren’t hiding it, Hillary …

Laws protecting life do sometimes limit the actions of others — murder laws restrict the actions of murderers — but there’s no legitimate movement advocating for killers’ “freedom to choose” to kill. Unlike the Supreme Court’s abuse of power in its Roe decision, a federal abortion ban done right is perfectly constitutional and even arguably called for by the Constitution and its guaranteed liberties.

Graham’s bill would protect approximately 55,800 unborn babies annually by prohibiting abortions after 15 weeks except in cases of rape, incest or threats to the mother’s life.

Polls show Americans are pro-life on abortion, and a recent national poll found 75 percent of Americans essentially agree with the Supreme Court overturning Roe.

A recent Wall Street Journal poll found 48 percent of Americans support banning abortions after 15 weeks while just 43 percent oppose it. Another poll by the Associated Press found even stronger support for such legislation, with 65 percent saying most or all abortions should be illegal in the second trimester and 80 percent in the third trimester.

At 15 weeks of pregnancy, unborn babies can suck their thumbs and yawn. Their hearts pump about 26 quarts of blood every day, and they show a preference for their right or left hand. Growing scientific research also indicates unborn babies can feel pain.
