Abortion activists have launched a cruel, heartless attack against grieving Christian celebrity Jessa Duggar Seewald after she lost an unborn baby to miscarriage.

Parade Magazine erroneously claimed Seewald needed a “life-saving abortion,” and others labeled the heartbroken mother a hypocrite because she is pro-life. Seewald, 30, formerly of the “19 Kids and Counting” reality show, has four living children with her husband.

On Friday, she posted a video on YouTube titled “Heartbreak Over the Holidays,” in which she and her husband shared news about the loss of their fifth child to miscarriage.

Seewald said she was in her first trimester when doctors revealed that the pregnancy did not “look good.”

“Nothing could have prepared me for the weight of those words in that moment,” she remembered. “At that moment, I was just in complete shock. I didn’t have words. I just immediately started crying.”

Because of past health problems, she said doctors recommended a D&C (dilation and curettage), a procedure used both in miscarriages and abortions, rather than allow her miscarried baby to pass naturally. Seewald said she has been recovering from the procedure.

After losing their baby, the family took comfort in their faith in God.

“I was thinking of Job and how when he lost everything that he held dear–his kids, everything–in that moment, he was still able to say ‘God is good,’” Seewald said, choking back tears. “I remember reciting those words of Job that says, ‘The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be thy name of the Lord,’ and I was able to thank God in that moment for giving us this life, even if we would never be able to hold this baby in our arms.”

But now abortion activists are heartlessly attacking the family based on false claims and misunderstandings about medical care and pro-life laws.

“This is at best ignorance, at worst a cruel lie,” Lila Rose, the president and founder of Live Action, responded to an attack by pro-abortion writer Josie Duffy Rice.

“Jessa miscarried,” Rose continued. “Her baby passed away & she needed a surgery to remove her little one’s body. An abortion intentionally kills a living baby. Abortion is an intentional act of homicide, a miscarriage is a tragic natural death.”

Miscarriage care and abortion are not the same thing, but pro-abortion activists have been deceiving women by trying to conflate the two. Although the treatment can be similar in both cases, such as a D&C, one involves removing a dead unborn baby from the womb, the other involves intentionally killing the child. Pro-life laws ban killing, not medical procedures.

The Centers for Disease Control recognizes that there is a clear distinction between the two in its annual abortion report. The government data only counts induced abortions, or the elective killings of unborn babies in abortions.

Part of the confusion arises from the medical terminology as compared to everyday speech. In medicine, a miscarriage is referred to as “spontaneous abortion,” while aborting an unborn baby is an “induced abortion,” according to the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs.

Laws that restrict and ban abortions allow miscarriage, or “spontaneous abortion,” care. They also allow life-saving care in cases of ectopic pregnancy and other rare pregnancy complications when the mother’s life is at risk. Pro-life laws only ban killing unborn babies in elective, induced abortions.

Dr. Ingrid Skop and Mary E. Harned, J.D. of the Charlotte Lozier Institute conducted extensive research into the issue last year, including analyses of state pro-life laws, abortion, and miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy care. They found that all state pro-life laws permit “abortion in those rare and heartbreaking circumstances when it is necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman,” including for miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies.

Skop and Harned said the misinformation from abortion activists, not the pro-life laws, is what is putting women’s lives in danger.

“A plain reading of any of these statutes easily refutes the false and dangerous misinformation being spread by pro-abortion activists,” they wrote.
