The Biden administration last week announced its Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will create a publicly-funded abortion hotline that will cost taxpayers around $1.5 million.
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra praised his department’s initiative, describing it as “a secure national hotline to provide referral services for women in need of accurate information about their legal reproductive health care options.”
CatholicVote Director of Government Affairs Tom McClusky said the hotline represents “a clear violation of the Hyde amendment, using tax dollars to set up a system to make it easier to kill children.”
The Hyde amendment prevents the federal government from using taxpayer funds to pay for abortions. The amendment, which has been law for over 40 years, was long supported by then-Senator and later Vice-President Joe Biden before he abruptly reversed his position ahead of his 2020 presidential run.

The launch of the new abortion hotline is only the latest of many efforts by Becerra to promote abortions in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022. Becerra describes himself as a “committed Catholic.”
CatholicVote reported in its January 2023 edition of “Heroes and Zeroes” that while serving as HHS secretary, Becerra traveled to Minnesota to lobby the State legislature to pass what State Republican Rep. Jim Nash called “the most extreme abortion bill in the entire U.S.”
Just after the repeal of Roe v. Wade, President Biden promised an “all-of-government” effort to expand and protect so-called “abortion rights” nationwide.
