Joe Biden’s massive spending bill appears to be dead after the lone pro-life Democrat in the U.S. Senate said Sunday that he cannot support it.

On Fox News, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia criticized Biden’s $2 trillion “Build Back Better” bill, saying he cannot justify supporting such “mammoth” spending when the country already is in deep debt, according to Townhall.

“I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. I just can’t. I tried everything humanly possible,” Manchin told the news outlet. “This is a no on this legislation.”

Manchin also has been firm about his commitment to opposing taxpayer funding for abortions, and pro-life leaders say Biden’s bill would be the biggest expansion of taxpayer-funded abortions in U.S. history.

In a statement, the Democrat senator said he cannot justify voting on such radical legislation to the voters in his state. West Virginia is strongly pro-life.

“I have always said if I can’t go back home and explain it, I can’t vote for it,” Manchin continued. “Despite my best efforts, I cannot explain the sweeping Build Back Better Act in West Virginia and I cannot vote to move forward on this mammoth piece of legislation.”

Without Manchin’s support, the legislation basically has failed. The U.S. Senate is divided 50-50 along party lines, and Republicans oppose the bill.

His announcement Sunday sparked outrage from leftists and Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, who called him a liar and his “excuses” “complete bulls—” on MSNBC.

Reacting to Omar’s comments, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and former ambassador to the United Nations, said Manchin’s decision is a “gift” to Americans, Townhall reports.

“Spending money we don’t have is BS. Giving government more control over people’s lives is BS. Glorifying socialism is BS. Manchin’s decision was a gift and second chance to America,” Haley responded on Twitter.

Pro-life lawmakers also praised the West Virginia senator for standing up for his constituents and refusing to play party politics.

“This should be a reality check to wild-eyed progressives that they are not the mainstream,” U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Nebraska, responded. “With a divided country, a 50-50 Senate, and blowout inflation, the American people don’t want to upend this country with nakedly-partisan legislation. Joe Manchin deserves credit for listening to West Virginians, rather than to bullies and screamers who follow those who disagree into bathrooms and who shut down traffic.”

National Right to Life, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Susan B. Anthony List and other leading pro-life organizations oppose Biden’s spending bill because it includes a number of measures that would force taxpayers to fund the killing of unborn babies in abortions.

“Thank you @Sen_JoeManchin for your bold stand against this massive bill that would use our tax dollars to pay for abortions,” SBA List wrote on Twitter. “Thank you for standing up for West Virginia’s values.”

LifeNews reported more about the abortion spending in the bill earlier this month:

When the plan’s backers tout its provisions to “close the Medicaid spending gap,” what it really means, according to Planned Parenthood, is that 800,000 women of reproductive age will gain access to taxpayer-funded abortion.

Planned Parenthood calls Build Back Better “welcome news for people in this country who struggle to access sexual and reproductive health care.” We all know that means abortion.

The plan makes no mention of the Hyde Amendment, which since 1976 has prevented American taxpayers from having to pay for most abortions. The National Right to Life Committee notes that H.R. 5766, the Build Back Better reconciliation plan, “contains numerous provisions to fund elective abortion in violation of the longstanding principles of the [longstanding, bi-partisan] Hyde Amendment.”

These include mandating abortion funding in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) plans, funding abortions through reinsurance payments and cost-sharing funding to states, and giving billions of dollars to various public health grants without Hyde Amendment protections. The Hyde Amendment prohibits taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid and other federal programs.
