The last surgical abortionist in Wyoming is quitting.

Brent Blue, a 71-year-old doctor at St. John’s Health, formerly Emergacare, in Jackson, recently handed in his resignation, and Feb. 10 is slated to be his last day, NBC News reports.

Without him, Wyoming will have only one abortionist left, Giovannina Anthony of Women’s Health and Family Care. She does chemical, or medication, abortions up to 10 weeks, according to the report.

Blue is the only surgical abortionist in Wyoming, and apparently he and his employer have not been getting along well.

He told NBC that he resigned due to a hostile work environment, and he plans to sue St. John’s and “ask the court to void a stipulation in his contract that bars him from working in Teton County, Wyoming, for three years after he leaves the company.”

Right now, he said he is not sure if he will quit working altogether or try to open an abortion facility in Idaho.

“If I succumbed to the threats and the risk, the anti-choice people win, and women lose,” Blue told the news outlet. “If health care providers don’t stand up for women’s health care rights, who will?”

For Blue, aborting unborn babies has been his work for decades. According to NBC, he first opened his Wyoming abortion facility 39 years ago.

Here’s more from the report:

Blue, who has been described by colleagues as “a blue dot in a red sea,” said he is offering a medical service that should be part of any well-rounded family care. He said he also counseled pregnant women on alternatives to abortion. …

“I’ve always felt that women’s rights and women’s health are an important issue,” he said. “And I’ve never understood why women get the short end of the health care stick.”

Many medical doctors disagree. They know that aborting an unborn baby is not health care, and there are two patients involved in every pregnancy: the mother and her child.

It is not clear how many unborn babies Blue aborted during his nearly four decades of work. According to the Wyoming Department of Health, 31 abortions were done in the second half of 2019. The state only recently began keeping track of abortion numbers.

The only Planned Parenthood facility in the state closed in 2017, and, although it referred women for abortions, it did not provide them on site.
