Even abortion activists struggle to hide the pain and turmoil of abortion.

Renee Bracey Sherman, the executive director of the pro-abortion group We Testify, became teary and emotional Tuesday when she shared her abortion story during a U.S. House committee hearing on abortion.

The message abortion activists have been pushing through the hearing and other venues is that killing unborn babies in abortions is normal and good – celebratory even.

But while Sherman claimed that she owes her life to her abortion and her mother’s abortion, her words were full of anguish and heartbreak, betraying the truth that abortions hurt mothers as they destroy unborn babies’ lives.

Speaking to the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Sherman said her mother had an abortion right after Roe v. Wade in 1973.

“I owe my life to an abortion,” Sherman said. “… It allowed her to move on, attend nursing school, and marry a fellow student and have a child with him. That child was me. And as my mother told me, ‘Renee, I chose you.’ That is exactly what abortion is about.”

Years later, Sherman said she found herself pregnant in a difficult situation. Choking back tears, she said she thought every day about throwing herself down the stairs, and, one night, she drank an “unsafe amount of alcohol” in an attempt to self-induce an abortion. It did not work, so Sherman went to an abortion facility to have her unborn baby aborted.

The abortion activist suggested that, rather than focus on encouraging and supporting pregnant women like herself and her mother through difficult circumstances, aborting their unborn babies is the answer to the world’s problems.

Sherman even implied that abortions are compassionate because they somehow protect children from suffering.

“Once these children are born, immigrant children are caged apart from their families,” she said. “Trans children are turned into political fodder, young students are murdered in their schools, and black and brown parents live in anxiety about the day their children encounter the police. These issues are not separate from abortion. They are the realities we consider when weighing whether we want to bring another life into this country.”

Yet, no one is arguing that born children should be killed for these same reasons. Unborn babies are no less valuable. Every abortion destroys the life of a unique, innocent living human being – the woman’s own child.

Sherman’s emotions – and those of so many others desperate to justify the killing of their unborn babies – indicate the truth that they want to hide, that abortions are another problem, not a solution to problems. And promoting abortions is an excuse not to truly help mothers and babies in need — something pro-life advocates do every day.
