Sheriff James Albert’s story is a familiar one.

Like so many other Democrats, the southwestern Pennsylvania sheriff recently quit the party because, among other things, he could no longer stand its support for the unlimited killing of unborn babies in abortions.

Breitbart reports Albert, the sheriff of Westmoreland County, officially switched to the Republican Party on Monday after being a lifelong Democrat.

“It was a really difficult decision and I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I feel I stand for the ideals of the Republican Party platform more than the Democrats today,” Albert told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The sheriff said he feels like the Democratic Party has left him rather than him leaving it.

“I’m pro-life, a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, a lifetime member of the NRA (National Rifle Association) and, today, I feel my ideals are closer to the Republican Party than Democrats,” he said.

He said Democrat leaders’ reactions to the recent Black Lives Matter riots and the murder of retired police captain David Dorn in St. Louis really upset him.

“These outrageous, lawless acts have been met with silence, acquiescence and, in some instances, outright support from the local, state and national leadership of the Democratic Party,” Albert said. “As a lifelong public servant and member of law enforcement, I have not left the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party has left me.”

Many others are sharing his sentiments about the party, which has grown increasingly radical on abortion and other issues. According to Breitbart, another sheriff in Vanderburgh County, Indiana also recently switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.

The sheriffs join a growing number of former party activists, politicians and voters who have quit the party within the past few years.

The Democratic Party also has been making it clear that pro-lifers are not welcome. In April, for example, the Tennessee Democratic Party voted to remove state Rep. John DeBerry from the primary ballot after he voted pro-life on a state heartbeat law. DeBerry is running as an independent in November.

One of the last pro-life Democrats in U.S. Congress, Rep. Dan Lipinski, also recently lost his seat after a number of party leaders endorsed his primary opponent, a woman who supports abortions without restriction and wants to force taxpayers to fund them.

And in 2018, the Missouri Democratic Party made it clear pro-life Democrats are not welcome when it removed platform language encouraging a “diversity of views on abortion.”

The Democratic Party has adopted an increasingly radical stance on abortion. In 2016 and again in 2020, the DNC approved a platform that supports abortions without restriction and taxpayer funding of abortions. Both are widely unpopular positions among the general public.

Democrats for Life estimates more than 23 million Democrats in the U.S. are pro-life. In 2016, Pew Research found that 28 percent of Democrats say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Marist/KofC polling also found that 23 percent of Democrats consider themselves pro-life and 40 percent say abortion is morally wrong.

Most Americans oppose most abortions and want laws to limit abortions or make them illegal. In a July poll, Gallup found 55 percent of Americans take a pro-life position wanting all (21 percent) or almost all (39 percent) abortions made illegal. The poll found just 29 percent of Americans think abortions should be legal in all cases, the position of the Democratic Party.

Polls consistently show that most Americans do not want their tax dollars paying for abortions either. A Politico/Harvard University poll found that a majority of voters oppose taxpayer funding for abortions. Just 36 percent of likely voters supported the issue, while 58 percent opposed it.
