A Wisconsin man will spend five years in prison after he tried to trick a pregnant woman into aborting their unborn baby by spiking her drink with abortion drugs.
Wausau Daily Herald reports Jeffrey S. Smith, 36, formerly of Grand Rapids and now of Deerwood, Minnesota, was convicted of attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child in the 2018 incident.
On Friday, a judge sentenced Smith to five years in prison followed by 15 years of extended supervision; he also prohibited Smith from contacting the victim or her children, according to the report.
The woman, who is not named in reports, was 20 weeks pregnant when Smith attempted to abort their unborn baby, according to authorities. She told police that Smith was the father and he was pressuring her to have an abortion.
In January 2018, the woman said she thought Smith spiked her water bottle with an abortion drug while she was in the bathroom. Later, she said she noticed “residue” in the bottom of the water bottle and did not drink it.
According to police, she brought the bottle to authorities after Smith left, suspicious that he may have been trying to kill her unborn baby. Police said their tests found mifepristone, an abortion drug, in the bottle.

Authorities also said they discovered text messages from Smith urging the woman to abort their unborn baby. He wrote, “it’s for the best,” “you take a pill …They watch you do it. It’s that simple. Side affects [sic] are virtually 0.” However, she refused.
Police also found a package for the abortion drug in Smith’s house after the incident, according to the report.
Smith allegedly bought the abortion drugs from Ursula Wing, 41, of New York City, who allegedly was selling the drugs illegally over the internet. The Daily Register reports Wing also faced charges in the matter and later pleaded not guilty to misbranding a prescription drug and conspiracy to defraud in federal court.
Since then, both the British and American governments, under the Biden administration, have made it legal to sell abortion drugs over the internet without ever seeing or talking to the purchaser. Pro-life advocates believe this will lead to more coerced and forced abortions.

Mothers frequently are forced or coerced to abort their unborn babies, and sometimes their decisions to protect their babies’ lives lead to more abuse. A recent BBC survey found 15 percent of women of childbearing age in the UK felt pressured to have abortions that they did not want.
Often the pressure comes from an intimate partner. Another new study from Lifeway Research found that 42 percent of men whose partners had abortions said they either “strongly urged” or “suggested” that she have an abortion. In 2009, research by the Elliot Institute found 64 percent of post-abortive women said they felt pressured to have an abortion, often from a spouse or partner.
Another 2014 study found that forced abortions are common among sex trafficking victims. In “The Health Consequences of Sex Trafficking and Their Implications for Identifying Victims in Healthcare Facilities,” researchers found that 55 percent of sex trafficking victims had at least one abortion, with more than half saying they were forced to abort one or more unborn babies.
Studies also have found high rates of violent abuse among women seeking abortions and pregnant women. Often, abuse also is connected to a mother’s refusal to abort her unborn child.
