Former Vice President Mike Pence said protecting unborn babies from abortion is a top priority for him because children’s lives are “more important than politics.”

In an interview Monday on Newsmax, the Republican leader emphasized his commitment to the pro-life cause.

“Well, I think defending the unborn first and foremost is more important than politics. I really believe it’s the calling of our time,” Pence told NewsNation. “Whatever the future holds for my family, we’re going to continue to champion the right to life. We’re going to continue to champion the interests of women, born and unborn.”

Speaking about a major lawsuit from pro-life doctors, Pence said the FDA made a huge error when it approved the abortion pill mifepristone in 2000, and women and unborn babies have died as a result. He referred to the tragic case of Holly Patterson, a young woman who died along with her unborn baby after taking the abortion pill in 2003.

Right now, federal courts are considering the lawsuit from OB-GYNs and emergency room doctors who say the abortion drug is dangerous and should be removed from the market. The drug is used to kill hundreds of thousands of unborn babies in the U.S. every year, and abortion activists have been relying heavily on it since the overturning of Roe in June.

Pence said the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling was a huge victory, but pro-lifers may have to work another 50 years to restore unborn babies’ right to life nationwide.

“As I said in the immediate aftermath of the Dobbs decision, it may take as long to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law in every state in this country as it took us to overturn Roe vs. Wade, but I believe that restoring the inalienable right to life to American law is that important,” he said.

A former Indiana governor and congressman, Pence has a strong pro-life record and frequently speaks about protecting unborn babies from abortion. He lives out his values in his private life as well. He and his family often attend the March for Life, and his daughter Charlotte is a pro-life advocate.

Pence celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year, calling it perhaps the “most consequential legacy” of the Trump administration. Since the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling in June, 14 states have banned abortions and thousands of babies’ lives have been saved.

“… to have been part of an administration that gave the American people this new beginning for life is something I’ll cherish the rest of my life,” Pence told NBC host Chuck Todd in November.

In June, the Supreme Court overturned Roe in a historic victory for life and returned the power to legislate abortion to the people. Because of Dobbs v. Jackson, states may protect unborn babies from abortion for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Currently, 14 states are enforcing pro-life laws that ban or strictly limit abortions, and others are fighting in court to do the same. Still others are passing legislation to ban abortions and increase support for pregnant and parenting families. Florida just passed a heartbeat law to ban most abortions once an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable, and Nebraska is debating a similar bill this spring.
