House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told abortion activists to be “prayerful” as they work to keep the killing of unborn babies in abortions legal during a Mother’s Day interview Sunday on CBS News.

Speaking with Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan, Pelosi brought up Mother’s Day as she criticized the U.S. Supreme Court for potentially overturning Roe v. Wade in the near future, according to Townhall.

“This is about something so serious and so personal and so disrespectful of women. Here we are on Mother’s Day, a week where the court has slapped women in the face in terms of disrespect for their judgments about the size and timing of their families,” Pelosi said.

Last week, Politico leaked a draft opinion from the court that overturns Roe. The ruling is not final, but it gave pro-life advocates strong hope that the court will rule on the side of life. If the Supreme Court does overturn the 1973 abortion ruling, states would be allowed to protect unborn babies from abortion again, and the Guttmacher Institute predicts as many as 26 states would do so.

To keep abortion legal nation-wide, Pelosi, D-California, wants Congress to pass the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act, a radical pro-abortion bill that would force states to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions for basically any reason up to birth and force taxpayers to pay for abortions.

The bill passed the U.S. House last fall, but it failed in the U.S. Senate. Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a pro-abortion Democrat, said he plans to hold a vote on the legislation again soon.

In her interview Sunday, Pelosi urged abortion activists to “be prayerful” about the legislation because it is unlikely to pass the Senate unless lawmakers end the filibuster.

“Let’s just be prayerful about this. This is- this is about respect for privacy,” she said.

In 1973, Roe v. Wade destroyed children’s rights before birth when it forced states to legalize abortions up to viability and allowed abortions up to birth. Since then, more than 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions.

The so-called Women’s Health Protection Act that Democrats want to pass would force states to legalize the killing of unborn babies for basically any reason up to birth even if Roe is overturned.

Pro-life leaders say the bill would get rid of bans on partial-birth abortions, late-term abortions, sex-selection abortions and taxpayer-funded abortions. Laws that protect women and girls would be eliminated, too, including parental consent for minors and informed consent laws that ensure mothers receive basic facts about their unborn baby’s development before going through with an abortion.

Polls consistently show that most Americans support strong legal protections for unborn babies – more than what Roe allows. LifeNews highlighted 11 recent polls here.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on the Mississippi abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health sometime this summer, likely in June.
