The village of Dunning soon could become the third in Nebraska to protect unborn babies by outlawing abortions.

News Channel Nebraska reports the Village Board of Dunning in central Nebraska voted Tuesday to move forward with a pro-life ordinance that would make abortions illegal within the village limits.

The vote was unanimous, but two more votes are required before the ordinance can be enacted, according to the report.

Christians at Sandhills Community Church in Dunning have been urging the village leaders to pass the ordinance, the report states.

Earlier this year, two other Nebraska towns, Hayes Center and Blue Hill, passed Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances to ban abortions within their borders.

When they did, Gov. Pete Ricketts praised the towns for taking action, KNOP News 2 reported at the time.

“Nebraska is a pro-life state, and communities are working to recognize and protect innocent life in a variety of ways. The Biden-Harris Administration is pushing a radical, pro-abortion agenda, and Nebraska must do everything we can to stand against the abortion lobby,” said Ricketts, a pro-life Republican.

The Sanctuary for the Unborn ordinance recognizes that unborn babies are valuable human beings who deserve to be protected under the law. It prohibits abortions within city limits and prevents abortion businesses from opening there. It also penalizes abortion practitioners for aborting unborn babies, but it does not penalize women who seek or have abortions.

To-date, 41 cities and towns in Texas, Ohio and Nebraska have passed Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances that protect unborn babies’ right to life and ban abortions.

The ordinances are saving lives. In May, voters in Lubbock, Texas overwhelmingly approved a Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance on the ballot, and Planned Parenthood was forced to stop aborting unborn babies there. The abortion chain challenged the ordinance, but a judge threw out its lawsuit earlier this summer.

Though abortion activists have threatened legal action, cities with Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances have been successful in court. In 2020, the American Civil Liberties Union dropped its lawsuit challenging several Texas cities’ pro-life ordinances.
