New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a supposed Catholic, promised Wednesday to spend $10 million of taxpayers’ money to build a new abortion facility near the Texas border.
Las Cruces Sun News reports the Democrat governor made the announcement as part of an executive order that she issued to expand abortions in the state.
Grisham said the money for the new abortion facility in Doña Ana County will come from her executive capital allocation funds. Along with the funds, she also ordered the state health department to find additional ways to expand abortions in New Mexico, especially medication abortions in rural and low-income areas, according to the report.
Doña Ana County is the home to Las Cruces, a city located across the border from El Paso, Texas. Grisham and the abortion industry likely hope the new abortion facility will bring pregnant women from Texas to abort their unborn babies.
Texas protects unborn babies’ right to life by banning abortions except if the mother’s life is at risk. In contrast, New Mexico has basically no restrictions on abortion, and Albuquerque is home to one of the few late-term abortion facilities in the country.
Grisham, who is up for re-election in November, claimed her pro-abortion actions will save women’s lives – contradicting thousands of OB-GYNs who say aborting unborn babies is not health care or life-saving.

“The work that we are doing saves women’s lives and their families, and the notion that women cannot have control over their bodies, dignity, respect and autonomy is outrageous,” Grisham said Wednesday, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican. “This is a state that is not going to let that be the status quo in any context for anyone, anywhere in the country.”
Abortions destroy the lives of unborn babies, and only about 1 percent are due to cases of rape, incest or risks to the mother’s health, according to state health department statistics. Many OB-GYNs also say they have never needed to kill an unborn baby in an abortion to save a mother’s life.
Precisely how many unborn babies are aborted in New Mexico every year is not clear. According to Centers for Disease Control data, state abortion facilities reported 3,942 abortions in 2019. However, reporting is voluntary and the number may be higher.
In 2021, Grisham signed a law repealing a 1969 statute that prohibited abortions except in cases of rape, incest or threats to the mother’s life. The statute was not in effect at the time because of Roe v. Wade, and repealing it ensured that abortion on demand remains legal in the state.
However, some New Mexico residents are fighting against their state leaders’ pro-abortion agenda. In July, the Otero County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution recognizing that unborn babies are valuable human beings who deserve a right to life. Other counties and cities are considering similar actions, including potential Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances that would ban abortions within city limits.
