Late Friday afternoon, Planned Parenthood released their annual report for 2021.

The release of this report comes unusually late in the calendar year. Planned Parenthood had released their last four annual reports in the months of January or February. This 2021 report provides further evidence that Planned Parenthood continues to prioritize abortion. Indeed, Planned Parenthood performed a record 383,460 abortions in 2021. That represents approximately 41 percent of the abortions performed in the United States.

The report also shows that Planned Parenthood performed more abortions in 2021 while providing fewer health services. The number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood increased by 8.5 percent over 2020. At the same time, cancer screenings fell by over 30 percent, well-woman tests fell by 39 percent, STI tests fell by 17.4 percent, and pregnancy tests fell by over 14 percent.

An examination of past Planned Parenthood annual reports shows a durable, long-term trend of performing more abortions and providing fewer health services. In fact, in 20 years the number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood affiliates has increased by an astounding 80 percent. During the same period, prenatal services offered by Planned Parenthood have declined by more than 43 percent.

Although Planned Parenthood performed fewer health services in 2021, it continues to receive more government funding. In 2021, it received $633.4 million in government grants and reimbursements — a 2.5 percent increase from 2020. Even worse, since the Biden administration was quick to repeal the Trump administration’s Protect Life Rule, Planned Parenthood will be eligible for more government funding through Title X grants. Planned Parenthood’s 2021 annual report, which shows increases in abortions and decreases in health services, should give pro-lifers plenty of ammunition to support efforts to defund it at both the state and federal levels.
