British mother Hajrah Aslam finally is catching up on the months she missed with her infant son after she contracted the coronavirus late in her pregnancy.
The Sun reports the 28-year-old Peterborough mother spent six weeks in a medically-induced coma and 11 weeks in rehabilitation before she was able to return home to her husband and son.
Aslam said her baby boy inspired her to keep fighting for her life when she struggled to deal with the pain.
“All I could see was my baby boy’s face. That was the end goal. I kept on saying his name, even when I was in excruciating pain. I kept on going and going,” she said.

Aslam contracted COVID-19 when she was 35-weeks pregnant with her son, her first child Huzayfah, according to the report. Doctors decided to deliver the baby boy by C-section to protect him from the virus, but Aslam grew worse.
Less than 24 hours later when her oxygen levels dropped, doctors decided to place her in a medically induced coma. It was six weeks until she came out of the coma and was sent to rehab at Askham Rehab in Cambridgeshire, the report states.
The young mother suffered a number of painful problems during the next several months. Because she was confined to her bed, she developed a large ulcer on her back. Aslam also was diagnosed with polyneuropathy, or damage to the peripheral nerves that can cause intense pain and numbness, and could not move her feet, according to the report.
After 11 weeks of rehabilitation, she was well enough to go home, Indy 100 reports. Askham Rehab described her recovery as “incredible” after all of the problems that she overcame.
Now, Aslam is home with her husband and 7-month-old son, making up for the time she lost with him.
“Being a first-time mum, I want to do all the things that mothers do; hold him, play with him. I feel like I’ve missed out from the beginning, but now is the time to make up for that,” she said.
“It’s been a really tough journey. When you say 11 weeks aloud, it seems crazy. It’s a really short amount of time and I’ve done it. It feels like I’ve won something. More importantly, I’ve got my life back,” Aslam added.
