A leading pro-life group is criticizing remarks from Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, who recently went on a national television program and complained about overturning Roe v. Wade. Mace also suggested that pro-life Americans not push for abortion bans to protect the lives of unborn children — saying that babies should be killed in abortions up to 20 weeks and to leave it at that.

Mace appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday — the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, where pro-life Americans mourned the deaths of 64 million unborn babies. Mace suggested that they allow even more abortions by compromising and squandering the opportunity Dobbs gave to protect babies from abortions

The congresswoman says “Republican and Democrat women” in her district are “swing voters are willing to find some middle ground here.” And the middle ground is essentially keeping abortions legal up to viability — making it so 99% of all abortions would stay legal.

“Everyone recognizes abortion up until birth is not something that they want. At the same time, banning all abortions with zero exceptions isn’t something people support,” she said. Democrats’ position on abortion, she added, is 24 weeks with “gestational limits,” while Republicans support banning abortions after 12 to 15 weeks on average. “Can we find some middle ground around 20 weeks, for example?”

These statements are factually incorrect as recent polling data shows half of Americans want an abortion ban and 69% want abortions banned at 12 weeks. Meanwhile, Democrats don’t want any limits on abortions — they want abortions up to birth, even voting to allow infanticide.

Mace added, “I don’t know if we can get there because both sides are really, really entrenched and I see that because I’m repeatedly attacked by pro-life groups even though I am pro-life.”

Yet Mace’s position is not a pro-life position, it’s pro-abortion, as allowing abortions up to 20 weeks essentially keeps abortions on demand in place — which would result in another 64 million aborted babies in the next 50 years.

For Marjorie Dannenfelser of SBA Pro-Life, Mace’s so-called compromise on abortion is a nonstarter.

“Appearing on Meet the Press Sunday, Representative Nancy Mace stated that she is pro-life while implying that her Democrat colleagues are currently willing to reach a national compromise on abortion. Yet she failed to mention that every Democrat except one just voted against a bill that would have required babies born alive after a failed abortion receive basic health care rather than be left to die,”she told LifeNews.

She continued: “Being pro-life requires opposition to the destruction of children and tragic underestimation of women that abortion is – this is first and foremost a human rights issue. And failure to take a strong, coherent stand and contrast it with the extremism of the other side – for example by supporting a minimum national standard limiting abortions when unborn babies’ heartbeats can be detected or when they feel pain – is an abandonment of leadership. It’s also a losing political strategy as we saw in the midterm elections.”
