Pro-life U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville continues his courageous stance for life this week in the U.S. Senate, fighting against a radical new Biden administration policy that forces taxpayers to support killing unborn babies in elective abortions through the military.
Months ago, when U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin introduced the policy, Tuberville warned that he would block Pentagon nominees if the administration tried to enforce the “illegal” policy. The Biden administration did so anyway in February, and the Alabama Republican has been blocking nominees since then.
On Sunday, in an opinion column at the Wall Street Journal, Tuberville defended his pro-life stance against continued criticism from Democrat leaders.
“Democrats haven’t explained how abortion makes our military stronger or safer,” he wrote. “The only war they are focused on winning is the culture war.”
The new department policy requires taxpayers to pay travel costs and paid time off for military service members and their families to abort their unborn babies. As a result, approximately 4,100 more unborn babies could be killed in abortions every year, Republican lawmakers said.

Tuberville, U.S. Congressman Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, and others have pointed out that the policy clearly violates Title 10 Section 1093 of the U.S. Code, which states that “funds available to the Department of Defense may not be used to perform abortions except where the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term or in a case in which the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest.”
Polls consistently show strong public opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions. A new Marist poll found 60 percent of Americans oppose using tax dollars to fund abortions in the U.S. Additionally, 78 percent oppose using tax dollars to fund abortions in other countries.
Bans on taxpayer funding for elective abortions used to have strong bipartisan support in Congress. Only recently did Democrat leaders abandon the American people on the issue and begin supporting taxpayer funding for elective abortions – a goal of the abortion industry, which spends huge amounts of money on elections.
Despite continued criticism from Democrats and news outlets, Tuberville said that he will not stop until the policy is gone.
“I hate to have to do this. It’s unfortunate, but we make the laws over here. The DoD doesn’t. This is not about abortion. It’s about taxpayer-funded abortions,” he said last week, according to Fox News.
His actions do not completely block nominees. Tuberville’s objections just prevent the U.S. Senate from voting to confirm long lists of nominees at once, as it typically does; instead, lawmakers must vote on each nominee one at a time, which takes longer.
Tuberville said his actions are not new or unprecedented either. According to 1819 News, a group of Democrats and Republicans blocked 9,000 military nominees in 1992, and others held up Pentagon nominees in 1997, 2003, 2010 and 2020.
Recently, U.S. House Republicans introduced legislation to reverse the order and strengthen the law that bans taxpayer funding for abortions in the military.
In February, LifeNews published a list of 25 recent polls that show Americans support legal protections for unborn babies.
