A prominent pro-abortion group in Virginia just endorsed Democrat Terry McAuliffe for governor, describing him as a “solid” ally in their fight to expand abortions.

In its announcementNARAL Pro-Choice Virginia said McAuliffe is a “proven reproductive freedom champion” who will make it a priority to expand abortions in Virginia.

McAuliffe previously served as governor of Virginia from 2014 to 2018. In that time, he vetoed several pro-life bills and worked to undo safety regulations for abortion through the state Board of Health. After he vetoed bills to defund the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood, he received an award from one of its affiliates.

“Terry McAuliffe promised to stand as a brick wall to attacks on abortion access during his first term as governor, and we know he will do that again in his second term,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia executive director Tarina Keene. “Hopefully, this time around, he won’t just stop bad legislation from becoming law. He will be able to prioritize and sign proactive laws that actually increase access to the full range of reproductive healthcare.”

NARAL wants Virginia to be a “safe haven” for abortion, meaning the state will allow unborn babies to be aborted for any reason up to birth and taxpayers will be forced to fund their deaths.

In a statement about the endorsement, McAuliffe promised that he will work to keep abortion on demand legal in Virginia, even if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

“With a conservative Supreme Court poised to hack away at the right to choose and Trump-endorsed Glenn Youngkin promising to go on ‘offense’ to attack reproductive rights if he’s elected, the stakes have never been higher,” McAuliffe said. “Virginians deserve to have a governor who will always fight to protect their reproductive freedoms.”

Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin is pro-life.

McAuliffe previously said he opposes limits on late-term abortions (when unborn babies are viable outside the womb). Polls consistently show that most Americans support bans on late-term abortions.

He also received an endorsement from the Virginia chapter of the pro-abortion National Organization for Women, or NOW.

NARAL also endorsed Mark Herring for state attorney general and Hala Ayala for lieutenant governor.
