Abortion activists are trying desperately to discount decades of basic science about fetal development as a growing number of polls show support for pro-life heartbeat laws.

Mainstream news outlets are quoting abortionists and pro-abortion doctors who claim that an unborn baby’s heartbeat is not really a heartbeat yet at six weeks of pregnancy. Instead, it’s “cardiac activity,” “electrical pulsing,” “flickering” and other terms – descriptions for a heartbeat that let abortion activists avoid actually saying the word.

NPR, for example, recently quoted several doctors who said a fetal heartbeat is “not an actual medical term and it’s being used inaccurately.”

“What we’re really detecting is a grouping of cells that are initiating some electrical activity,” Professor Jennifer Kerns of the University of California San Francisco told NPR. “In no way is this detecting a functional cardiovascular system or a functional heart.”

According to the Daily Wire, CNN host Chris Cuomo questioned a Texas abortionist about the term on his show Sept. 2, asking: “The idea of six weeks, heartbeat at six weeks, does that even exist in science? Is there a heart at six weeks?”

Allison Gilbert, an abortionist at Southwestern Women’s Surgery Center in Dallas, responded, “There is most certainly not a fully-formed heart, at that gestational age; it’s more of an electric flicker that you can see on the screen, which we refer to [as] cardiac activity, rather than a heartbeat.”

Other mainstream news outlets also have joined in on the misinformation campaign, but it is not difficult for Americans to find out the truth. From textbooks and medical experts to baby websites and even Planned Parenthood, the basic scientific facts are revealed: The heart is one of the first organs to develop in the human body and it begins beating at the earliest stage of life.

According to a pregnancy outline on the Mayo Clinic website, “the heart and other organs also are starting to form and the heart begins to beat” at about four weeks after conception.

Even Planned Parenthood – the largest abortion chain in the U.S. – admits on its website that an unborn baby has a heartbeat. It states that by five to six weeks of pregnancy, “a very basic beating heart and circulatory system develop.”

Secular Pro-Life recently compiled a list of quotes from textbooks, scientific journals and other expert sources that confirm an unborn baby’s heart begins to beat as early as 22 days gestation.

A few years ago, the prestigious University of Oxford and the British Health Association also published an amazing study suggesting that the human heart may begin beating as early as 16 days after conception.

“The heart is the first organ to form during pregnancy and is critical in providing oxygen and nutrients to the developing embryo,” the university wrote.

In an interview this week with Fox News, Students for Life of America president Kristan Hawkins slammed the left for their science denial.

“The Trust-the-Science Crowd has a double standard when it comes to biology and human development,” Hawkins said. “A unique life with his or her own genetic code exists at conception, and a baby’s heart is beating at six weeks of life. A heartbeat is a universal sign of life for people who care about others.”

Attempts to deny the science have grown as polls show Americans support heartbeat laws that prohibit abortions once an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable, about six weeks of pregnancy.

A new Rasmussen poll found that Americans support the Texas heartbeat law, with 46 percent in favor to 43 percent against. An April poll by the University of Texas-Austin found that 49 percent of Texans support making abortions illegal after six weeks of pregnancy, while 41 percent oppose it. And a national Hill-HarrisX survey in 2019 found that 55 percent of voters said they do not think laws banning abortions after six weeks – when an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable – are too restrictive.

The Texas heartbeat law went into effect Sept. 1. If allowed to remain in effect, the law potentially could save tens of thousands of unborn babies from abortion every year.
