Sen. Josh Hawley believes the killing of unborn babies in abortions has become a kind of “religion for the far left” in America.

On Tuesday, the Missouri Republican spoke with Fox News host Tucker Carlson about the outrage and potential violence expected from abortion activists after news broke about a leaked draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

“Abortion is religion for the far left, and they are willing to do anything to defend that religion and to force it on everybody else,” Hawley said. “And that’s why they are willing to burn down the court as an institution.”

For some Americans, abortion really is a religion. The Satanic Temple calls abortion a “religious right” and a “ritual,” likening it to communion or baptism for Christians. In 2020, it even raffled off an abortion to raise money for its lawsuits challenging pro-life state laws on religious freedom grounds.

Even U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who supposedly is Catholic, once referred to late-term abortions as “sacred ground,” and some mainline Protestant pastors describe abortions as “moral” and “holy.”

Carlson said many fear this pro-abortion “religious” fervor could lead to violence, and Hawley agreed that it is a possibility.

“We are at that point,” he said, noting how Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer publicly threatened two Supreme Court justices by name if they dared to overturn Roe v. Wade. Hawley said other Democrat lawmakers are making similar comments.

Their goal is to “hijack the institution” and force their pro-abortion “religion” on the nation, he told Carlson.

Through Roe v. Wade, nine justices decided that Americans were not capable of making their own decisions about the tough moral issue of abortion, Hawley continued.

The 1973 ruling forces states to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions up to viability, about 23 weeks, and allows states to legalize abortions up to birth. In the past 49 years, about 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions.

Now, the Supreme Court has the opportunity to overturn Roe through the Mississippi abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health and allow states to protect unborn babies from abortion again. If that happens, the Guttmacher Institute predicts as many as 26 states would ban abortions, which researchers say would save hundreds of thousands of unborn babies’ lives.

Hawley expressed hope that the Supreme Court justices will remain committed to overturning Roe and refuse to be intimidated by the threats from the left.

“This is about whether democracy is going to have its day,” Hawley said. “What the court should do and what this opinion does do is that it puts democracy back in the driver’s seat, and I hope the court will stick with it.”
