Leading pro-life U.S. Sen. Steve Daines called out Democrats’ abortion extremism Wednesday, saying they want sea turtle eggs to have more rights than unborn babies.

The Montana Republican spoke on the U.S. Senate floor in opposition to a radical pro-abortion bill that would force states to legalize the killing of unborn babies up to birth even if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Democrat leaders named the bill the Women’s Health Protection Act, but pro-life leaders say the bill should be called the Abortion Without Limits Up to Birth Act.

Speaking ahead of a vote in the U.S. Senate, Daines said the bill would eliminate bans on late-term abortions and sex-selection abortions, conscience protections for pro-life doctors and health and safety standards for abortion facilities.

“That’s how radical this bill is,” he said. “Under this radical abortion bill, an unhatched sea turtle would have more protections than an unborn human baby.

“Why do we have laws in place that protect the eggs of a sea turtle or the eggs of eagles? Because when you destroy an egg, you’re killing a preborn baby sea turtle or a preborn baby eagle,” he continued.

Daines pointed out just how extreme the Democratic Party has become, saying their bill would strip away all legal protections for unborn babies in all 50 states, KMMS AM 1450 reports.

“When it comes to a preborn human baby, rather than a sea turtle, that baby will be stripped of all protections in all 50 states under the Democrats’ bill …” the senator said. “Is that the America the Left wants?”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a vote on the legislation after news broke last week about a leaked U.S. Supreme Court draft ruling that overturns Roe v. Wade. It is not a final ruling.

Democrats did not have enough votes to pass the bill, and it failed in a 49-51 vote Wednesday.

The so-called Women’s Health Protection Act would force states to legalize the killing of unborn babies for basically any reason up to birth even if Roe is overturned.

It would get rid of bans on partial-birth abortions, late-term abortions, sex-selection abortions and taxpayer-funded abortions. Laws that protect women and girls would be eliminated, too, including parental consent for minors and informed consent laws that ensure mothers receive basic facts about their unborn baby’s development before going through with an abortion.

Polls consistently show that most Americans support strong legal protections for unborn babies – more than what Roe v. Wade allows. LifeNews highlighted 11 recent polls here. A new Rasmussen poll this week shows more Americans want Roe v. Wade overturned (48 percent) than want the ruling to remain in place (45 percent).

A January poll from Marist University found that only 36 percent of Americans want abortions to remain legal without limits, while 61 percent want states to be allowed to protect unborn babies from abortion again. A 2021 Associated Press poll also found strong public opposition to abortions in the second and third trimesters.

Other polls show support for heartbeat laws, which protect unborn babies from abortion as soon as their heartbeat is detectable, about six weeks of pregnancy.

The Roe ruling forces states to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions up to viability and allows states to legalize abortions up to birth. Since then, about 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on the abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health sometime this summer, likely in June.
