A century ago, American suffragettes understood that women’s rights must be secured for all women, including those who are not yet born.
The early feminists knew abortion was not a “right” but a tragedy, an “exploitation” of women and “child murder.” They fought for true women’s rights for all women and succeeded in securing the right to vote.
But today, many of those who claim to be fighting the same fight ignore the fundamental right to life. Contrary to true women’s rights and the mission of the suffragettes, they fight for the “right” to kill babies in the womb in abortions – for any reason, including because the baby is a girl.
Their perversion of the early feminists’ mission is abundantly clear on Women’s Equality Day, Aug. 26, the day set aside to celebrate the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.
In honor of the day, President Joe Biden issued a proclamation that would have horrified the early feminists. He usurped their legacy to promote what they repeatedly and strongly condemned: abortion.
“My Administration is committed to bearing out the promise of the suffragists, who understood that for women to attain true equality in our country, they must have an equal place at the ballot box,” Biden began.

Mixed in with his thoughts about voting rights and the early feminists, he subtly added calls to expand abortion on demand across the world.
Biden urged Americans to support the Equal Rights Amendment, a dead U.S. Constitutional amendment that abortion activists are trying to resurrect. Pro-abortion groups openly admit the amendment would be used to repeal pro-life laws like the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban and limits on taxpayer-funded abortions, parental consent requirements and late-term abortion bans.
Biden also promised to defend and strengthen women’s “reproductive freedom” – meaning abortion without limits, paid for by the taxpayers.
“On Women’s Equality Day, we recognize the unique challenges and barriers women face, and the rights that need defending and strengthening,” the president said. “These rights include a woman’s constitutional right to reproductive freedom and access to health care, regardless of zip code or income …”
His words are a direct talking point from the pro-abortion movement. Abortion activists’ press releases and speeches are peppered with the words “health care” and “zip codes” and “income” as they demand that taxpayers be forced to pay for elective abortions in the United States and overseas, and call on the FDA to end its safety regulations on abortion drugs.
Biden claimed he wants to “honor the efforts of trailblazers and barrier-breakers” like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Victoria Woodhull, Alice Paul and many others. But he and other so-called women’s rights advocates are doing the exact opposite when they lump the killing of unborn babies in with the cause.
The early feminists knew that killing a child is not a “right” and abortion hurts women, born and unborn. After almost 50 years of legalized abortion on demand, Americans like Biden should know this, too.
Since Roe v. Wade, thousands of women have been injured and dozens more killed along with their unborn babies in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions. Millions of others live with the life-long sorrow of knowing that they ended their baby’s life. Then there are the many, many women and girls who are pressured or forced into aborting their unborn babies by abusive partners, parents or sex traffickers, while the abortion industry ignores the red flags, takes their money, kills their child and then sends them back to deal with the abuse on their own.
And the baby girls, the millions upon millions of baby girls – and boys, too – who deserved a right to life, a chance to thrive and grow, to vote and work, to marry and befriend, to imagine and achieve. All that is gone for the nearly 63 million unborn babies who have been killed in abortions in the past 48 years.
In honoring the achievements of the early feminists, Americans also must remember their wisdom and foresight about abortion. They knew that women will never achieve true freedom by killing their own children, and that all Americans must be afforded basic human rights, the most fundamental being the right to life.
