Pro-abortion leaders claimed they wanted abortions to be safe. Then they fought against basic health and safety regulations for abortion clinics.

They claimed to be pro-choice, but then they attempted to discredit the work of pro-life pregnancy resource centers, the abortion pill reversal treatment and basic informed consent practices.

They claimed they wanted to protect women from dangerous, self-induced abortions. But now they are openly promoting them.

Self-induced abortions are becoming “more popular” across the U.S. now that the pro-abortion movement is openly promoting what it once called a dangerous crisis, according to Teen Vogue.

And the very language that abortion activists used for years to claim that legalizing abortion was necessary to protect women from dangerous self-induced abortions, they are now calling stigmatizing.

The pro-abortion movement is fighting the “stigma and stereotypes that paint self-managed abortion as wholly unsafe — which actually isn’t the case at all for self-managed medication abortion,” according to Teen Vogue.

One of the “expert” promoters of self-induced abortions is Dr. Daniel Grossman, an abortionist and researcher at the University of California San Francisco. He and others are promoting the use of the abortion drugs mifepristone and misoprostol for at-home use.

These drugs have been used for medication, or chemical, abortions up to 10 weeks of pregnancy for about two decades in the U.S. Mifepristone, the first pill, makes the uterus inhospitable to new life by blocking the hormone progesterone. It basically starves the unborn baby to death. A day or two later, the second drug, misoprostol, is taken to induce contractions and expel the baby’s body, usually into a toilet at home.

Until very recently, doctors were directly involved in these abortions, seeing the patient for a check-up and ultrasound before giving her the drugs. This spring, however, the Biden administration stopped enforcing safety regulations on the abortion drugs and began allowing them to be sold through the mail without the woman ever seeing a doctor in person. Biden used the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse, but pro-life leaders warn that the change soon could become permanent.

Grossman cited biased research by his university, Planned Parenthood and other abortion activists to claim that the abortion drugs are safe and effective.

“The combined regimen of both medications is overall about 97 percent effective,” he told Teen Vogue. “With the misoprostol alone, it’s about 85 percent effective — higher if you’re using three or four repeated doses.”

Other research, however, indicates that the abortion drugs are not safe for the mother or her unborn baby. Risks include excessive bleeding, severe abdominal pain, infection and hemorrhage. The study “Immediate Complications After Medical Compared With Surgical Termination of Pregnancy” found a complication rate of approximately 20 percent for the abortion drugs compared to 5.6 percent for surgical abortions.

Some women have died along with their unborn babies after taking the drugs. In the United States, mifepristone has been linked to at least 24 women’s deaths and 4,000 serious complications — and those were with a doctor’s supervision. Without it, the risks and complications could be much higher.

New data from England, Wales and Ireland, which also recently began allowing women to take abortion drugs at home, suggests that complication rates are higher than what pro-abortion groups are reporting.

“Since approval of telemedicine abortion in England and Wales, 12,000 women have been treated in hospital for complications arising from medical abortion treatment failure. That’s 1-in-17 of women using pills-by-post,” according to a new investigation by British public health researcher Kevin Duffy.

Legalizing abortion is not about safety. Legal or illegal, abortions kill unborn babies and hurt mothers. For pro-abortion leaders, legalizing abortion never has been about protecting women or promoting “choice.” It’s about the power and money involved in killing unborn babies.
