A deaf baby girl’s delight at hearing her mother’s voice for the first time is bringing smiles to hundreds of thousands of people all over the internet.
Mother Christina Pacala posted the video recently on the social media platform TikTok showing her daughter Riley right after she received hearing aids, Fox News reports.
In the video, Riley, who was five weeks old at the time, can be seen laying in her mother’s arms with her new hearing aids. As Pacala begins talking to her daughter, Riley’s pained face turns to a smile, and her little eyes shine brightly as she stares into her mother’s face.
“I love you,” Pacala tells her daughter.
The 39-second video quickly captured people’s attention. Since Pacala posted it earlier this month, about 1 million people have watched it.
“I debated on whether to post this video of my deaf daughter hearing for the first time,” she explained in the video. “Hearing aids are not some magical ‘fix’ for deaf people. Deaf people don’t need to be fixed. They’re just a tool to access sound. But, this was a pretty special moment for us.”

Pacala said her goal is to raise awareness about hearing loss in infants and promote American Sign Language, which the whole family is learning together.
She frequently shares videos about their experiences raising Riley, who is now a toddler. Some show Riley and her parents practicing sign language as she plays and eats and when they read bedtime stories together.
“Riley is a smart, happy, and very energetic child,” Pacala told Fox News. “She loves playing with blocks and baby dolls, listening to music, and signing bedtime stories with her father each night. We’re excited to be able to share our journey, and hope to help people understand that deaf kids can do absolutely anything.”
