Simply speaking up against President Joe Biden’s radical abortion agenda is no longer enough. Catholic Church leaders must take action if they do not want to be “complicit” in the evil of aborting unborn babies, Catholic writer Margot Cleveland challenged in a column at The Federalist this week.

Many Catholics are urging church leaders to deny communion to Biden. The president frequently touts his Catholic faith, but he supports radical pro-abortion policies such as forcing taxpayers to fund the killing of unborn babies in abortions — a position that is widely unpopular with Americans, including a majority of Democrats.

Cleveland said Catholic bishops must act, especially after Biden repealed the Mexico City Policy last week. His action forces American taxpayers to give hundreds of millions of dollars to pro-abortion groups like the International Planned Parenthood Federation, which kills babies in abortions around the world and lobbies to legalize abortions in pro-life countries.

Biden repeatedly has ignored Catholic leaders’ calls to support unborn babies’ right to life. Instead, Cleveland said he is “genuflecting at the altar of the extreme abortion left.” On the campaign trail, he even abandoned his support of the Hyde Amendment, a popular, long-standing measure that prohibits taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid.

“… church leaders now must make a choice: Either condemn Joe Biden’s pro-abortion governance or become complicit in the president’s scandalous support of abortion and lose the moral authority necessary to pastor the flock,” Cleveland wrote.

She continued:

The Catholic Church can no longer ignore President Biden’s support for the grave moral evil of abortion and his clear demonstration “that he is not in full communion with the Catholic Church.” By signing the executive order rescinding the Mexico City Policy, President Biden has turned promises and policy positions—such as his assurance on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade that “the Biden-Harris Administration is committed to codifying Roe v. Wade and appointing judges that respect foundational precedents like Roe”—into unequivocal formal cooperation with the grave sin of abortion.

If church leaders continue to ignore President Biden’s formal cooperation with abortion, they will become complicit in the scandal. Here, non-Catholics must understand “scandal” refers not to some tabloid concept, but to a grave evil.

She said just speaking up is not enough anymore; Catholic leaders need to follow through. Otherwise, Catholics may get the impression that church teachings are optional, she continued.

According to Canon law, Catholics “obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to holy communion.” She said Biden should be given the opportunity to repent and reverse his pro-abortion executive orders; but if he does not, he should be denied communion.

“No Catholic should want this outcome, but anything less will render the church complicit in Biden’s heresy,” she wrote.

Some Catholic leaders have made similar arguments in recent months. Rhode Island Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin, Bishop Samuel Aquila of the Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado, Philadelphia Archbishop emeritus Charles Chaput and others have said publicly that they do not think Biden should receive communion unless he repents.

Some Catholic leaders, however, disagree. In November, Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory of Washington, D.C. said he will not refuse to give communion to Biden.

The Christian Post reports Biden received communion at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown during his first week in office.

Biden’s plans and the people leading his administration are radically pro-abortion. They also oppose religious freedom protections for Catholic charities and employers. His vice president, Kamala Harris, has been accused of anti-Catholic bigotry. She also prosecuted pro-life undercover journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood’s aborted baby body parts trade.

If Biden does what he promised, abortions could increase across America. Not only does Biden plan to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law in case the U.S. Supreme Court overturns it, he also wants to end the Hyde Amendment and force taxpayers to pay for the killing of unborn babies in abortions.

In April, Biden went so far as to call the killing of unborn babies an “essential medical service” during the coronavirus pandemic. His health care plan would expand abortions as well by forcing insurance companies to cover abortions as “essential” health care under Obamacare.

He also promised to undo all of President Donald Trump’s progress for life, including restoring funding to the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood.

On religious freedom, Biden’s position also is deeply troubling. Biden has endorsed anti-religious freedom policies that would force nuns, religious charities and hospitals to violate their deeply-held beliefs by funding the killing of unborn babies in abortions and potentially even by helping to facilitate their deaths.
